Knitting Tips

Here you'll have access to my top knitting instructor tips for the best results in your knitting.

My three top tips are:

1. Make a tension square as this ensures the end result of your hard work will be perfect! Following a knitting pattern requires following pattern instructions of a 2D into a 3D design which fits correctly in all the right places! A tension square also means you have spare yarn for if you run out or need to make any changes, darning, etc. It's also a good idea to include a spare button on your tension square. That way if the garment has buttons and a button comes off or gets lost you have a spare!

2. Read the pattern instructions before starting as this allows you the opportunity to see how the garment is constructed, whether you start with the back/front if knitting flat, how the sleeves are knitted or added into the garment and any other features that you would be wise to know beforehand. The devil really is in the detail!

3. Decide if you are knitting in the round or flat before you start If knitting in the round the way you read any chart pattern for colour work or lace pattern is always from right to left. If knitting flat, row 1 (usually the right side) is right to left, row 2 (usually the wrong side) is left to right. It may sounds obvious, but the simplest mistakes can cause you to have to rip out the hard work you've done and start a section again. Tension between knitting flat knitting and knitting in the round will be different too, so ensure you create a tension square so you can size your needles up or down to ensure a good fit
